I.
Over the rocky, uneven land you come to proclaim
Sovereignty over the people who followed you, fought alongside you
They agree to your claim, you now can become Great King
And conquer.
Conquered people you bring cowering before your greatness
They bring with them their idols, their failed gods
But your pantheon is a little empty, so you welcome them
“The land of a thousand gods,” Priestess Puduhepa says
She can say this proudly, for she is Queen of the Land.
II.
Over the rocky land, they come to proclaim freedom
From a redid, corrupt structure, you wish to do your own version
And your companions, your followers agree.
Your native neighbors agree, but you become greedy
You think your way of thought is the Right One
Why, you are only a child! Sixty years of life
Compared to the ancient legends that will continue to
outlive you, you arrogant buffoon but somehow you win
I don’t know how, because no matter who comes or how many
You insist yours must be premier in this rocky land
And as the land becomes flat, becomes sandy and wet
You drag your neighbors and cut their hair
And others you destroy their names and hopes
How many people have you hosted, really?
So much complexity destroyed to reflect
A weak form of and ancient legend once
Meant to teach virtue, now it’s used as an excuse
When Ladies Fate and the Goddess Victory gamble on
Your event and favors you, oh your stones
Reflect the ideals you wish it to and call it art
While others actively burn offerings at altars
While others pray to their ancestors, some can talk
Others don’t understand, we don’t speak the same tongue.
So much complexity ruined by bastardization and simplification,
Laziness, you corrupted a large file of nonfictional data
Why are you like this, you are a land of many
You should have been the land of a thousand gods
But now you have none.
Just so we’re clear, the “Land of a Thousand Gods”, is a reference to the Hittite Empire. For more info on that moniker please look up Puduhepa, priestess of Ishtar and Queen of the Hittite Empire
